Remembering the St. Louis Globe-Democrat

Days and nights on the rim

I'll never forget those hot summer nights working the rim in the sports department, in a building with no air conditioning. Herman Squeezingham, Marvin Potsterton, Arby Fallstrom, Tom Clone, Generic Face Offner and Agate Galarraga.

The 13-run pool, run by that great old guy whose name slips my 58-year-old mind.

Jack Farmer answering the phone, "Th--ports."

Myron leaving for home before dark because everyone knew his car didn't have headlights.

A lot of fun memories, including covering two Final Fours, but a lot of bad ones about not getting paid and actually having to pay my own way to cover the NCAA regionals in Kansas City.

I learned a lot at the Globe and made some great friends. Hard to believe it's been more than 20 years.

Mike Rappaport

Great old guy

That would be Slugger Harris. Lived to be as old as Mount Rushmore, died a week or two after his mother.

I'm not sure I ever knew his first name.
